Rider's Guide - How to Ride the Bus

1. Study the bus map and find out which bus route serves your area and where you want to go.

2. The times shown below each sub-title indicate when the bus will arrive at the location. If you are boarding at a location between two time points, use the earlier time as a guide.

3. Riders should go to a nearby bus stop sign. In areas where there are no bus stop signs, the bus driver will stop at your hand signal. Choose a corner or intersection where the entire bus can be pulled to the curb for safe and convenient boarding.

4. The name of each bus route is displayed on a large sign above the windshield and on the side window next to the entrance door.

5. When the bus arrives, have your exact fare or bus pass ready. Bus operators do not carry change. Please wait for departing passengers before you board.

6. When your one way trip requires the use of more than one bus, you will need to ask your driver for a transfer when departing the bus at the Transfer Center. A transfer entitles a passenger to transfer to another route in order to reach their destination. The transfer is valid for less than one hour and there is no extra charge.

7. When the bus is approximately one block from your destination, signal the operator by pulling the bell cord above the windows. Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before exiting.

On-board the Bus

You want a safe, clean, comfortable ride. Be considerate and follow our simple rules.

Do:

  • Take a seat if one is available and remain seated while the bus is moving.
  • Listen to and obey instructions given by the driver.
  • Read informational hand-outs and notices posted in the bus.
  • Wear proper clothing. Shirts and shoes are required. Ice skates and roller blades cannot be worn on the bus.
  • Give your seat to any person who, because of age or physical condition, is less able to stand than you are.

Do Not:

  • Smoke or chew tobacco.
  • Eat or drink.
  • Play your radio or tape player unless you use headphones.
  • Use loud or offensive language.
  • Be boisterous, push, or scuffle.
  • Put your feet on the seats, seat backs, or walls.
  • Leave trash on the bus.
  • Bring bulky items on the bus.
  • Bring animals, except guide dogs, on the bus.
  • Carry on lengthy conversations with the drivers.
  • Leave your child in his/her stroller – strollers must be folded.

Drivers may ask riders who do not observe the rules to leave the bus.

Bus Destination Signs

On every city bus the destination signs are located above the front window of the bus. These designate the route the bus will travel. Double check these destination signs for your correct route when entering the bus.

Lost and Found

If you have lost something on the bus, give us a call at 341-4490 between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Beyond listed hours an answering service is available. Leave a description of the article along with your name and telephone number.

Transfers

When your one-way trip requires the use of more than one bus, you will need to ask the driver for a transfer. A transfer entitles a passenger to transfer to any other route in order to get to a destination without paying an additional fare. Transfers are valid only when used at the downtown transfer point. A transfer must be used no later than one trip after it is issued. A transfer must be used to continue your trip on a different route. Transfers cannot be used for a return trip. A transfer is not a round-trip ticket.

Fare Information

Every time you board a bus you must pay a fare or present the driver with valid identification that you have already paid (transfer, ticket, pass, etc.). Elderly and disabled individuals must show special fare card or ID when boarding to take advantage of the half adult fare.
