UWSP and Late Night Buses Continue

April 16, 2010

University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point students voted the week of March 15, 2010 to continue funding the Campus Connection/Shopping and Late Night Transit bus routes for at least another year. These popular student services demonstrate how UWSP and the city of Stevens Point can partner to the benefit of both.

The Campus Connection and Shopping routes provide day time service to students from off-campus housing areas to the UWSP campus as well as community shopping areas. The Late Night Transit, or LNT, provides transportation from student housing areas to downtown from 10:15 pm till 3:15 am (the last bus leaves ShopKo at 2:45 am) Thursday-Saturday when UWSP is in full session.

Starting in 2004, the Connection routes have seen a steady growth in ridership with 111,486 rides being taken in 2009. This service has helped relieve parking stress while providing students with convenient, reliable transportation to campus.

The LNT began in September 2009 to facilitate safe, convenient, and orderly movement of people to and from downtown during peak nighttime hours. More than 6,000 rides were taken during the first semester and ridership grows weekly.

Downtown businesses are benefiting from customers having an easy transportation option and the community benefits from after bar crowds riding the bus home rather than walking through residential neighborhoods or driving while intoxicated.

Changes aimed at streamlining routes and increasing access are planned for the fall 2010 semester. Ridership is expected to continue climbing as more students become aware of the LNT service through word-of-mouth and increased promotion.

For more information about these services contact the Stevens Point Transit office at 715-341-4490 or visit the Transit Department page.
