Serve Wisconsin Commission Awards AmeriCorps Supplemental
Grant for Stevens Point Sustainability Initiative
The Serve Wisconsin Commission Board announced
Friday that the City of Stevens Point's Central Wisconsin Resiliency Project will receive nearly $200,000 in federal
funding to carry out sustainability initiatives in and around the city. The project was developed by volunteers
working with Mayor Andrew Halverson and it will carry out many of the tasks identified in the 2008 Pathway to a
Sustainable Stevens Point plan.
Mayor Andrew Halverson noted that the AmeriCorps program will provide a low-cost way to implement the actions listed
in the plan. "Hundreds of citizens participated in writing the eco-municipality plan, but we all struggled
to see how we could carry out so many initiatives with scarce financial resources," Halverson said. "This
federal assistance will leverage not only city resources, but time and efforts of local non-profits as well."

Emergency Weather Siren System Test
The City of Stevens Point is in the process
of updating their Emergency Weather Siren System from four to seven sites to better meet the needs of the city.
The city in large part is receiving help from the Stevens Point School district by providing four of the seven
sites within the community.
The Emergency Siren System was last updated in the mid 1980s and Stevens Point has grown from 12.29 square miles
in 1980, to its current size of 17.13 square miles. The increased growth has been primarily to the east, with the
siren at P.J. Jacobs being the furthest east to cover this area since the 1980s. The addition of three sites and
relocation of one of the existing sites will provide coverage to the business, residential and park areas that
have developed in this area and the highly populated areas immediately surrounding the city to the east.
Testing of several of the updated sites will begin August 31 with additional testing dates to be announced as the
remaining sites are completed. The sites to be tested August 31 are SPASH 1201 North Point Dr., Washington Elementary
3500 Prais St., and Bannach Elementary 5400 Walter St.
The seven sites are: SPASH, 1201 North Point Dr.; McKinley, 2926 Blaine St.; Washington, 3500 Prais St.; Bannach,
5400 Walter; Fire Station #2, 4401 Industrial Park Dr.; Brilowski Dr., 2800 blk.; W. Clark St., 100 blk. |

New Law Bans Electronics from Landfills and Incinerators
As of September 1, 2010, Wisconsin's electronics
recycling law, 2009 Wisconsin Act 50, bans two categories of electronics, covered electronic devices and eligible
electronic devices (EEDs), from landfills and incineration. Electronics sold to Wisconsin households, K-12 public
schools and Milwaukee Parental Choice Program schools are part of this E-Cycle Wisconsin program. Previously, Wisconsin
law required only businesses, governments, private schools, colleges and universities, and those not covered by
E-Cycle Wisconsin, to recycle their electronics or manage the devices as hazardous waste. Beginning September 1,

Economic Development Bill could Help Redevelop Our
Downtown
On July 20, Seventh District Congressmen
Dave Obey (D-WI) announced that in the transportation and urban development bill that passed the Appropriations
Committee that day were a number of provisions to spur economic development in northern and central Wisconsin.
Initiatives that will benefit northern and central Wisconsin in the bill include $750,000
to help the City of Stevens Point eliminate blighted and environmentally contaminated properties in the downtown
area. The properties, once cleaned up, would
be redeveloped for new businesses to use to create jobs, generate incomes, and provide for housing opportunities.
Obey, who chairs the committee and worked to have the provisions included, said, "These are important economic
development projects that could bring jobs to the region and provide long-term economic development help to effected
communities. In these tough economic times these provisions could be important to local communities throughout
our area." Obey noted that the bill must still be approved by the full House and Senate and signed by the
President before it becomes law, "but having these funds included in today's version means that a major hurdle
has been cleared." |
